Overview

BIRCH Network is a small charity offering support to asylum seekers across Birmingham. We have a specific project supporting unaccompanied young asylum seekers aged (16-25). We offer casework and befriending support, as well as a weekly youth hub. Many of the young people we support have been incorrectly age assessed as adults and are really struggling to access age-appropriate support.

Our youth hub, which runs on a Thursday 2-5pm from a welcoming and supportive Church in Sparkhill offers a space for these young people to come together, to develop friendship and peer support. We offer a range of activities: casework support, games, English teaching, friendship, sports etc.

We are looking for ESOL support volunteers to enhance our offer to these young refugees. They are desperate to learn English and many struggle to access college places. We are looking for volunteers who can help with the following:

– lead on delivering ESOL classes to the group (there is a wide range of abilities within the group) – other volunteers are happy to support this work but need guidance
– plan lessons and set tasks and homework that the young people can take away and practice
– work with other volunteers to ensure that we can offer a range of support at different levels

You will be joining a very friendly and welcoming volunteer team, supervised by two staff members.
We are an inclusive and supportive organisation. Our current ESOL support is very ad hoc and unstructured and we hope to be able to improve on this.

We are happy to cover travel costs and the costs of any materials relating to these sessions.

We welcome volunteers with a range of experience.
